Starlight* Examines the Myth of the Sailor Wars In the ‘article’, so to speak, that I had written for Starlight before my site went down, I argued or rather stated possible theories of the Sailor Wars. Now that was fine and dandy, and I just might do it again later on in this article. But there’s one small problem: technically there is no such thing as the Sailor Wars. But didn’t Sailor Galaxia mention it in the final episode of the Stars season? Yes she did. And I can say that with complete honesty, because recently I’ve been able to watch the major parts of the Stars season (finally). However, there is no mention of a war between Chaos and the Sailor senshi from across the universe. The only war that was ever discussed in the manga was a war that was taking place in the far future between Sailor Cosmos (Sailor Moon’s future self) and Chaos: a war between light and dark. That’s the probably the truest undertone of the whole Sailor Moon series; that light cannot survive without the darkness. We are often taught that we cannot appreciate the good times without the bad ones. I believe that is one of the messages that Naoko is trying to convey in her story. So there wasn’t a Sailor Wars then? I don’t think anyone knows the real answer to that. Sure there could have been, but not according to what I like to call “the official Sailor Moon story/timeline”. It was probably something that Naoko had contemplated at one time or another, but felt that it really didn’t add anything to her story. That is, of course, the purpose of fan fiction. Fans can come up with their own ideas of what happened, although it is rare to see such ideas that are plausible in the Sailor Moon universe. So, what’s my theory? I believe that if there was ever a Sailor Wars that it would be something that would continue throughout time. There would always be periods of peace followed by those of war. It would also be something that would have started with the creation of Sailor senshi, who in my opinion are the guardians of the universe, along with their respective planets, and the bravest of warriors. It’s also natural, I find, that Sailor senshi are women. Women are the mothers, healers, and protectors; even though in our patriarchal society it has been seared upon our minds that it is the men who are the protectors. I am not a feminist by any means, but there is a certain truth to what I am saying. Have you ever seen a mother defending her young? Humans and animals alike, you do not want to mess with a mother and her young...but I digress. It’s always cool when someone thinks up a new way of telling a story about the Sailor Wars. It’s also even more awesome when they think of something that actually might be plausible. For instance: I’m thinking that Queen Serenity had for-warning of Beryl’s attack on her kingdom. Why? Well, the fact that she has in her possession one of the most powerful weapons in the universe – the silver crystal. Now, who wouldn’t want to get their evil little hands on that? And since Beryl is tied to Metallia, and Metallia tied to Chaos – then one could just assume that it was Chaos that was trying to get the crystal. Right? So, if Queen Serenity had known that evil would one day show up and try and take the crystal, then she would have had knowledge of Chaos, and the Sailor Wars, which ties in with my whole ‘there are periods of peace and periods of war’ theory. Metallia, the Death Phantom, Pharaoh 90, and Galaxia were all Chaos’ minions. They were used to try and destroy his greatest enemy and the one responsible for his failure. One can also assume that since there has been senshi since the beginning of the universe, that Queen Serenity could have been at one point a Sailor senshi, or that even her mother was a senshi. So there’s another way that she could have knowledge of the Sailor Wars and Chaos. But then why wasn’t this knowledge passed onto Princess Serenity/Usagi? Well, even great warriors can get cocky: maybe at one point the Sailor senshi of the past thought they had destroyed Chaos and felt that Chaos was no longer a threat. It happens all the time in a lot of stories! So that’s miss Miriya’s little Sailor Wars theory. Hey, it could work. I might need to refine some things, but it could work. What do you think? I was thinking about writing a story on this, but maybe I should just leave well enough alone? Please be sure to read this article written by Sakura. It explains the End of Stars for those of you who have not seen it, or just need some things clarified. Discuss this topic in the War Room.
