Starlight* Examines the Origins of Otaku Senshi

Now, no one really knows for sure you developed some of the very first otaku senshi, or even if they were called that, but we do know that the creation of otaku senshi is booming. Everyone wants to create their own senshi based on their own ideas and what they would like to contribute to the Sailor Moon universe. But what does otaku mean exactly? Well, I googled it and found this definition on Animeinfo.org:

Otaku (oh-TAH-kuu)
n. - From the Japanese, literally meaning "house". In Japan, the term refers to someone with a heavy, and sometimes near-religious interest in something. In the Japanese culture it also carries a derogatory meaning, in the context of being someone with no real social or personal life outside of the object of their obsession (much like the term "fanboy" or "nerd" in Western culture). However, outside of Japan, the term may or may not carry a derogatory meaning depending on the person being referred to. Many anime fans in Western cultures proudly (and sometimes mistakenly) call themselves otaku, preferring to use the term to describe themselves as a "hard core", or knowledgeable, anime fan.

So there you have it. Now you know what an otaku is, and now know when to use the term and when not to. Can you imagin calling otaku senshi "fan senshi" - it could work. Personally, I'm used to referring to made-up senshi as otaku senshi.

If you've seen the original Starlight, then you would have noticed that I went on my own little search for 'Sailor Proximas' on the web. I found 1, but the owner never emailed me back. I was just interested why she would call her senshi that and how she came up with the name. Today, months and months later, I'm going to try that search again and see what I come up with. I was also planning on doing all the other Zodiac senshi, but seeing as how their names are so common, I see no point in searching for them.

Well, I did find an otaku senshi by the name of Sailor Proxima Centauri on a sprite request site. I have contacted the owner with a few questions and hopefully this time I'll get a response!

Alrighty! Well I got a response from the owner, who will remain anonymous - seeing as how silly me forgot to ask if I could use their name. So here is my little interview with the creator and owner of Sailor Proxima Centauri.

Q: Why call your senshi Sailor Proxima Centauri?
A: She's the sister of Sailor Alpha Centauri, and seeing how Alpha Centauri and Provima are binary star systems, I thought it was perfect.

Q: What inspired you to create her and how did you decide her look?
A: She is completely opposite of her sister Alpha, who's costume is blue and black, so she needed to have something opposite, so I chose orange and yellow.

Q: What is her mission and what are her powers?
A: Her powers are kind of like a fire ball-type power, but are based on how she feels. So if she's happy they might be yellow, or if she's mad they might be red. Her mission, before she met her sister, was to find her and kill her, but when she met Alpha she got purified and fights "evil" - but not alongside her sister. So she's kind of a loner.

So we have very different senshi as you can see, even though they have (roughly) the same name. I based the name 'Sailor Proxima' off of the same concept as this person did, but there are still many differences in the character. Sailor Proxima was never evil, whereas Sailor Proxima Centauri was - at one point. Sailor Proxima also doesn't have a sister; she has a brother. Amano is of course, by no-means a senshi either.

I find it really interesting that so many senshi have the same name, yet can be so different. Senshi are fun to create and even though your senshi might have the same name as another's, it's always fun to create them and make them your own.
